Peacebuilding through Sport & Art
After three decades of conflict, generations of Sri Lankan youth were left disconnected — divided by geography, language, and history. Appé Lanka believes in rebuilding those connections through the universal languages of sport and art.
The concept is simple yet powerful: create spaces where students from across the country can meet, play, create, and grow together — on equal ground. Whether it’s a friendly game of cricket or football, a shared drama performance, or a collaborative art workshop, these interactions foster empathy, trust, and long-term understanding.
In 2017, partner schools from the South visited Poonakary for a day of friendly matches. The following year, students from Poonakary made the journey to Colombo, engaging not only in sport but also in art, drama, music, and shared experiences — from visits to city parks to group dances and storytelling.
What began as an exchange of games has grown into a cherished tradition that breaks barriers and builds friendships. Sport and art have become tools of reconciliation — helping young Sri Lankans celebrate diversity and build a more unified future.
