Let Them Bloom – Give Them Water

In Poonakary, the most essential resource — clean, usable water — was missing for far too long.

While Appé Lanka launched projects to provide bicycles, renewable energy, and education, a difficult question lingered: “What about water?” It’s the most basic human right — and yet over 6,000 schoolchildren in this rural area were depending on rainwater and water bowsers just to get through the day.

The reality was hard to ignore: no clean water in a region called “Village of Flowers.” Schools had no reliable access. Families relied on uncertain seasonal rains. And during the wet season, when roads were flooded, even water trucks couldn’t reach them.

That changed when Appé Lanka launched the “Let Them Bloom” water initiative — determined to bring purified water to every school in Poonakary. In just six weeks, six schools were equipped with water purification systems. Now, just 18 more systems stand between 6,410 students and their right to safe, clean drinking water.
